DEET, scientifically known as N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, represents one of the most thoroughly studied and effective insect repellents available, with a history of use spanning more than six decades. Originally developed by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1944 and registered for public use in 1957, DEET has become the benchmark against which other repellent compounds are measured. While more commonly associated with human insect protection, DEET-containing products are also used in equine applications to provide relief from biting and nuisance insects that torment horses during warm months.
The mechanism by which DEET repels insects involves interference with the insect's ability to detect hosts through olfactory cues. Research indicates that DEET works by blocking insect odorant receptors, preventing them from recognizing the carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and other attractants that mammals naturally produce. This creates a sensory barrier that makes treated animals less detectable to mosquitoes, flies, and other biting insects. Unlike insecticides that kill on contact, DEET is a true repellent that deters insects from landing on or biting treated surfaces without necessarily killing them.
DEET is available in a wide range of concentrations and formulations, with products containing anywhere from 5% to 100% DEET on the market. For equine use, lower to moderate concentrations are typically employed, as the extended protection provided by very high concentrations is less relevant when reapplication throughout the day is feasible. Spray formulations are most common for horse application, though wipes, roll-ons, and lotions may also be used, particularly for facial application where spray bottles are impractical or startling to the horse.
The safety profile of DEET in horses requires careful consideration, as the compound can cause adverse effects including skin irritation and, with sufficient absorption, systemic toxicity. While DEET is generally well-tolerated at appropriate concentrations and application rates, the plasticizing properties of DEET mean it can damage certain materials including some plastics and synthetic fabrics, which has implications for equipment and tack management. Horse owners considering DEET-based products should understand both the benefits and limitations of these products to make informed decisions about their inclusion in fly management programs.
