The general effectiveness and safety profile of piperazine in aquarium applications is moderate compared to more modern anthelmintics. Piperazine demonstrates reliable activity against intestinal roundworms and some other nematode species but has a narrower spectrum of activity than benzimidazole or imidazothiazole medications. Importantly, piperazine is considered ineffective against Camallanus worms, which are among the most common and problematic nematode parasites in ornamental fish.
