Without adequate vitamin D3, guinea pigs cannot efficiently absorb dietary calcium regardless of how much calcium is present in their food.
Vitamin D3 supplementation for guinea pigs is available in several forms suitable for small animal administration. Liquid drops formulated for small animals or infants can be administered directly or added to food, providing convenient dosing control. Some guinea pig diets and supplements are fortified with vitamin D3, contributing to daily intake. Powdered vitamin D3 supplements can be mixed with food or other supplements. Because vitamin D3 is fat-soluble rather than water-soluble, it should be administered with food containing fat to enhance absorption and should not be added to water.
The safety profile of vitamin D3 supplementation requires more careful attention than water-soluble vitamins because fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate in body tissues and potentially reach toxic levels with excessive intake. Vitamin D toxicity, while uncommon, can cause serious problems including elevated blood calcium levels, soft tissue calcification, and organ damage. This risk underscores the importance of proper dosing and veterinary guidance when supplementing vitamin D3, particularly for guinea pigs who may already receive some vitamin D from fortified foods or sunlight exposure.
