The drug exhibits bacteriostatic activity at typical concentrations, meaning it stops bacteria from multiplying rather than directly killing them, which allows the guinea pig's immune system to eliminate the infection. Azithromycin has excellent tissue penetration and accumulates in cells, particularly in phagocytes that travel to sites of infection, resulting in high concentrations at infection sites even when blood levels are relatively low.
