Mucus contains proteins linked together by disulfide bridges, and when these bonds are cleaved by acetylcysteine, the mucus becomes significantly less viscous and easier to clear from the airways. This mechanism is distinct from expectorants like guaifenesin, which work by increasing fluid secretion rather than chemically altering mucus structure. In guinea pigs with thick, sticky secretions that are difficult to expel, acetylcysteine provides a more aggressive approach to improving airway clearance. Acetylcysteine for nebulization is available in sterile solution form, typically at concentrations of 10% or 20%. The solution is placed in a nebulizer device that converts it into a fine mist that the guinea pig inhales.
