The theoretical basis for lysine use in feline herpesvirus management originated from research on human herpes simplex virus, which showed that lysine could inhibit viral replication in laboratory cultures when arginine levels were simultaneously reduced. The proposed mechanism involved competition between lysine and arginine, with the hypothesis that high lysine levels would reduce arginine availability needed for viral protein synthesis. However, subsequent research revealed critical problems with this theory as applied to cats. Feline herpesvirus proteins are not significantly more arginine-rich than host proteins, and lysine supplementation in cats does not appear to reduce plasma arginine levels under normal dietary conditions.
Lysine is available in numerous veterinary formulations specifically marketed for cats, including powders, tablets, chewable treats, pastes, gels, and capsules. Brand names include Viralys, Enisyl-F, Felisyl, and others. These products are sold over the counter without prescription and have been heavily marketed to cat owners as supportive therapy for cats with upper respiratory infections or chronic herpesvirus-related conditions. The widespread availability and historical recommendation of these products has contributed to lysine becoming a standard component of many veterinary protocols despite the lack of evidence supporting its use.
Given the scientific evidence against lysine efficacy and the potential for harm, veterinary professionals and researchers have called for reconsideration of routine lysine supplementation recommendations. A systematic review published in 2015 concluded that there is no scientific evidence supporting lysine supplementation for preventing or treating FHV-1 infection in cats and recommended immediate discontinuation of this practice. However, lysine remains widely used and recommended, highlighting the challenge of changing established practices in the face of new evidence. Cat owners should discuss the current state of evidence with their veterinarian when considering lysine supplementation for their cats.
