Despite its therapeutic utility, chloramphenicol carries significant safety considerations that limit its routine use. The medication's potential to cause dose-dependent bone marrow suppression in cats, combined with rare but serious idiosyncratic aplastic anemia in humans who handle the drug, has resulted in more cautious prescribing practices than in previous decades. Veterinary supervision is essential when chloramphenicol is used, with appropriate monitoring and client education about handling precautions. When used judiciously for appropriate indications, chloramphenicol remains a valuable tool in the veterinary antibiotic armamentarium.
