Calcium EDTA, known formally as calcium disodium edetate and abbreviated as CaEDTA, is a chelation agent used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of lead poisoning and other heavy metal intoxications in cats. Marketed under the human pharmaceutical brand name Calcium Disodium Versenate, this drug is used extra-label in feline patients under veterinary supervision. CaEDTA functions by binding to divalent and trivalent metal ions in the bloodstream, forming stable water-soluble complexes that the kidneys can then excrete. Lead poisoning, though more commonly diagnosed in dogs, does occur in cats and can produce severe neurological, gastrointestinal, and hematological consequences that demand prompt chelation therapy.
The chemical structure of CaEDTA is central to its therapeutic action. Edetate disodium (EDTA) by itself is an aggressive chelator that would strip essential calcium from the body, potentially causing fatal hypocalcemia. By pre-loading the EDTA molecule with calcium, the resulting CaEDTA compound retains the ability to chelate metals with a higher binding affinity than calcium, such as lead and zinc, while releasing its bound calcium ion in exchange. This preferential binding protects the patient from dangerous calcium depletion. In feline patients, the distinction between CaEDTA and disodium EDTA is critical because accidental use of the non-calcium form can cause rapid, life-threatening hypocalcemia. Veterinary staff must verify that the calcium-containing formulation is used for every treatment.
CaEDTA is supplied as a concentrated injectable solution at 200 mg/mL and must be diluted before administration. In cats, the drug is most commonly given by subcutaneous injection after appropriate dilution, though slow intravenous infusion is also used in some clinical settings. The subcutaneous route is generally preferred in feline practice because it provides sustained absorption and is technically simpler for repeated dosing over the typical treatment course of several days. Treatment protocols for lead poisoning in cats usually involve multiple doses administered over a period of two to five days, followed by a rest period before reassessment and potential additional treatment cycles.
Although CaEDTA is approved by the FDA for human use, its application in veterinary medicine falls under extra-label drug use guidelines. Veterinarians prescribing CaEDTA for cats must establish a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship and maintain appropriate medical records. The drug has a well-established history of use in small animal practice spanning several decades, and its pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety profile in cats have been characterized through clinical experience and published veterinary literature. Because lead poisoning is a potentially fatal condition, CaEDTA remains an essential emergency medication in veterinary toxicology despite its extra-label status in animal patients.
