Avian bornavirus infection triggers an immune-mediated inflammatory response that progressively destroys nervous tissue throughout the body, though the gastrointestinal tract is most commonly and severely affected. Neurological manifestations including ataxia, tremors, and seizures may also develop as central nervous system involvement progresses.
