This devastating disease affects the nervous system, particularly the nerves controlling the gastrointestinal tract, leading to progressive inability to digest food properly, wasting, neurological symptoms, and eventually death in many affected birds. Avian bornavirus, identified as the causative agent of PDD in 2008 after decades of investigation, belongs to the Bornaviridae family and exhibits characteristics that make it particularly challenging to address therapeutically. The virus infects nervous tissue and persists within the body, causing an inflammatory response that damages the nerves controlling various organ systems. Unlike many other viral infections where the immune response helps clear the pathogen, the immune response to bornavirus appears to contribute to the tissue damage that causes clinical disease. The absence of a cure for PDD does not mean that nothing can be done for affected birds. Diagnosis can be challenging, as no single test definitively confirms PDD in a living bird, and the veterinarian must integrate clinical findings, diagnostic testing, and response to treatment to reach a working diagnosis. Once PDD is suspected or confirmed, the veterinarian develops an individualized management plan addressing the specific manifestations present in that patient.
