A Stimson's Python hatchling emerges from its egg after an incubation period of roughly 50 to 60 days. The tiny snake, typically measuring between 15 and 25 centimeters, will often remain partially coiled within or near its egg for several hours after pipping. This is entirely normal behavior, and the hatchling should never be forcibly removed from the egg. The yolk sac may still be partially attached, and the snake needs time to fully absorb the remaining nutrients before separating on its own.
Once the hatchling has fully emerged, it should be placed into a small, secure enclosure with minimal furnishings. A simple setup with paper towel substrate, a small water dish, and a snug hide is ideal. The enclosure must be escape-proof, as newborn Stimson's Pythons are remarkably small and can squeeze through gaps that seem impossibly tiny. A small plastic tub with ventilation holes drilled no larger than a few millimeters works well for the first few months.
During the first day, the hatchling will be mostly inactive. It may explore its enclosure briefly but will spend most of its time hidden. Avoid handling the snake during this initial period, as the stress of hatching is already significant. Fresh water should be available from the start, though the hatchling may not drink for a day or two. Keep ambient noise and vibrations around the enclosure to a minimum to allow the snake to settle in comfortably.
Temperature regulation is critical from the very first hours. The enclosure should offer a warm side of approximately 30 to 32 degrees Celsius and a cooler side around 24 to 26 degrees. An under-tank heat mat connected to a reliable thermostat is the safest way to achieve this gradient. Without proper warmth, the hatchling's metabolism will not function correctly, and its immune system will be compromised from the outset.
