When picking up a juvenile sand boa, approach from the side rather than from above. A hand descending from above can trigger a defensive response because it mimics the approach of an aerial predator. Scoop the snake gently from beneath and allow it to move through your hands at its own pace. Avoid gripping tightly or restraining the snake, as this creates a negative association with handling.

Juvenile sand boas often enjoy the warmth of human hands and will settle into a loose coil when they feel secure. Some individuals prefer to burrow between fingers or tuck into a sleeve cuff, which is consistent with their natural inclination to seek enclosed spaces.
