Incorporating plants — either live or high-quality artificial — provides visual barriers, climbing surfaces, and areas for the snake to weave through, encouraging natural exploratory behavior.

Swimming is a natural and important form of exercise for ribbon snakes. If your enclosure setup allows for a larger water feature, you will likely observe your juvenile spending significant time swimming and hunting in the water. Juvenile ribbon snakes are susceptible to several health issues that keepers should monitor for during this active growth phase. External parasites like snake mites appear as tiny dark or reddish moving dots, often found around the eyes, chin, and under scales. Both require veterinary treatment.

Respiratory infections remain a concern throughout the juvenile stage. These are almost always linked to environmental factors — temperatures too low, humidity too high, or poor ventilation. Socialization & Handling

The juvenile period is the ideal time to establish a consistent handling routine that will shape the snake's tolerance of human interaction for the rest of its life. Begin with short sessions of two to three minutes, two or three times per week, and gradually extend the duration as the snake becomes more comfortable. Consistency is more important than session length — regular, predictable handling teaches the snake that being picked up is a routine event and not a threat.

Always approach the snake calmly and from the side rather than from directly above, which can trigger a predator-avoidance response. Scoop the snake up gently, supporting its body at multiple points, and allow it to move through your hands at its own pace. Ribbon snakes rarely sit still during handling — they will weave through fingers and explore — and this is perfectly normal behavior for the species.

Avoid handling within 48 hours of feeding to prevent regurgitation, and skip handling sessions when the snake is in the blue phase of its shedding cycle, as reduced vision during this time makes the snake more defensive and stressed. Also avoid handling if the snake is showing signs of illness, as the additional stress can hamper recovery.

If you keep multiple ribbon snakes, handle each one individually. Group handling increases the risk of accidental injury and can create stress through the scent transfer of musking secretions from one snake to another. Each snake should also have its own enclosure unless you have extensive experience with cohabitation and a sufficiently large setup to support it, as resource competition and accidental cannibalism of smaller cage mates can occur.
