An adult Red-Bellied Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata) reaches its full size of eight to sixteen inches by approximately eighteen to twenty-four months of age, at which point a permanent enclosure should be established to serve the animal for the remainder of its life. A ten-gallon glass terrarium or a plastic enclosure of equivalent volume — approximately twenty by ten by twelve inches — provides ample space for a single adult. Despite the species' small size, providing adequate floor area is more important than height, as Red-Bellied Snakes are strictly terrestrial and fossorial and make no use of vertical climbing space.
The enclosure must feature a secure, tight-fitting lid with locking mechanisms. Mesh screen tops commonly sold with glass terrariums are problematic for two reasons: adult Red-Bellied Snakes can push through surprisingly narrow gaps where the screen meets the frame, and screen tops allow rapid humidity loss in dry indoor environments. A glass or acrylic lid with built-in ventilation strips, or a modified screen top covered partially with aluminum foil or plastic wrap to retain humidity while maintaining airflow, is preferable. Enclosure security remains paramount throughout the animal's life — Red-Bellied Snakes are persistent and methodical escape artists that will investigate every seam, gap, and ventilation opening in their enclosure on a nightly basis.
Substrate for the permanent adult enclosure should prioritize humidity retention, burrowing capability, and ease of maintenance. A base layer of organic topsoil or coconut coir topped with a generous layer of damp sphagnum moss and leaf litter creates an environment that closely approximates the forest floor microhabitat the species inhabits in the wild. This layered substrate system supports a self-sustaining community of beneficial soil organisms — springtails, isopods, and beneficial bacteria — that break down waste products and reduce the frequency of full substrate changes. In a well-established bioactive setup, full substrate replacement may only be necessary every three to four months rather than the monthly changes required with inert substrates.
Furnishing the enclosure with natural materials creates a complex microhabitat network that promotes natural behavior and reduces stress. Flat pieces of cork bark, small sections of hardwood branches laid horizontally, patches of dried oak or maple leaves, and clumps of live moss all serve as functional environmental features. Each item provides hiding opportunities, textural variety for the snake to explore, and microhabitat diversity that supports different temperature and humidity zones within the enclosure. Avoid artificial decorations with sharp edges, small removable parts, or painted surfaces, as these can injure the snake or leach chemicals into the humid enclosure environment.
