This means that housing a Mussurana in the same room as other snake species demands absolute enclosure security, with no possibility of escape from any enclosure in the room. A Mussurana that escapes and encounters another snake in the collection will almost certainly attempt to consume it, regardless of the other snake's species, size, or venomous status.

Cross-contamination of scent between snake enclosures is a subtler concern that can affect the Mussurana's behavior and feeding response. Handling other snake species before interacting with the Mussurana — or using the same tongs, hooks, or equipment without thorough cleaning — can transfer snake scent that triggers heightened predatory arousal. This arousal may manifest as intensified tongue-flicking, restless pacing, and increased likelihood of a feeding strike directed at the keeper's hands. Maintaining dedicated handling equipment for the Mussurana and washing hands thoroughly between handling different snake species eliminates this cross-contamination risk.

Quarantine protocols are especially critical for Mussurana keepers acquiring new reptiles for their collection. Any new snake or reptile entering the collection should be housed in a separate room for a minimum of sixty to ninety days, during which it undergoes veterinary examination, fecal testing, and observation for signs of infectious disease. This quarantine period protects both the new acquisition and the existing collection from cross-infection with parasites, viral agents, and bacterial pathogens. Mussuranas, as obligate ophiophages in the wild, may have evolved alongside certain snake-borne pathogens in their native range, but captive populations lack the immune diversity and environmental resilience of wild populations and are vulnerable to novel infections introduced by unquarantined animals.
