The iridescent dorsal sheen, ranging from deep purple to bronze depending on lighting and individual genetics, is at its most vivid during the prime adult years.
Assessing body condition in a fossorial species requires attention to different anatomical landmarks than those used for arboreal or large terrestrial constrictors. A healthy adult Loxocemus bicolor should present a smoothly rounded cross-sectional profile with no visible vertebral ridge or prominent rib definition when viewed from above. The ventral surface should be flat and broad, providing a stable platform for the rectilinear locomotion this species employs during surface travel. Excess weight is indicated by prominent lateral fat deposits that create a visible bulging between the belly scales and the first row of dorsal scales, while underweight animals display a triangular cross-section with a sharp dorsal ridge.
Sexual dimorphism in this species is subtle but measurable. Males tend to be slightly shorter and leaner than females and possess relatively longer tails with a broader base owing to the hemipenal bulges. Cloacal spurs, vestigial hind limb remnants found in many primitive snake lineages, are typically more prominent in males, though this characteristic is less reliable for sex determination than probing or popping performed by an experienced handler. Knowing the sex of an adult specimen is relevant not only for breeding considerations but also for interpreting behavioral changes such as seasonal restlessness or feeding refusal that may be hormonally driven.
Once full adult size is achieved, growth slows dramatically but does not cease entirely. Like all snakes, Loxocemus bicolor exhibits indeterminate growth, meaning the animal continues to increase in length and mass throughout its life, albeit at a negligible rate after maturity.
