Green Anacondas (Eunectes murinus) are ovoviviparous, meaning females retain eggs internally and give birth to fully formed, live neonates rather than depositing eggs externally. This reproductive strategy distinguishes anacondas from the majority of python species and has significant implications for the condition of neonates at the moment of arrival. A typical litter ranges from twenty to forty neonates, though exceptionally large females have been documented producing litters exceeding seventy young. Each neonate emerges enclosed in a thin, transparent membrane that it must rupture independently using vigorous body movements. Keepers should allow neonates to free themselves from these membranes without assistance, as the struggle stimulates respiratory function and muscular coordination essential for the first hours of life.
Newborn Green Anacondas measure approximately twenty-four to thirty-four inches in length and weigh between six and fourteen ounces, making them substantially larger at birth than most colubrid species and many smaller boid neonates. Despite their relative size, neonates are vulnerable and rely entirely on instinct during the first hours. Within minutes of clearing the birth membrane, healthy neonates will begin tongue-flicking to assess their surroundings and may attempt to move toward the nearest water source. This immediate orientation toward water reflects the species' deeply aquatic nature and should be facilitated by providing a shallow water area within the birthing enclosure.
The birthing area should be prepared well in advance of the expected parturition date, which typically falls six to seven months after confirmed copulation. A large, secure enclosure with a shallow water section no deeper than two inches, an ambient temperature of 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity between 75 and 85 percent provides optimal conditions for the female during labor and for the neonates immediately after birth. The substrate should be simple and easy to clean — newspaper or unprinted kraft paper works well — because the birthing process produces significant fluid and residual membrane material that must be removed promptly to prevent bacterial proliferation.
Once the female has completed parturition and all neonates are breathing independently and moving freely, the young should be separated from the mother within twenty-four hours. Female Green Anacondas do not exhibit parental care and may inadvertently crush or injure neonates through normal movement, particularly given the significant size disparity between a fully grown female and her offspring. Neonates should be individually housed or grouped in small numbers in separate enclosures to allow for accurate feeding records, health monitoring, and controlled socialization. Any stillborn neonates or unruptured membranes should be removed and the birthing enclosure thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before the female is returned to her primary habitat.
