Any deviation from these parameters, particularly sustained cold temperatures, can suppress immune function and digestion over time.

Annual or biannual veterinary checkups with a reptile-experienced practitioner are a sound investment in long-term health. These visits allow for fecal parasite screening, a general physical examination, and an opportunity to discuss any subtle changes you have observed. External parasites, particularly snake mites, can appear at any time, often introduced through new enclosure furnishings, substrate, or contact with other reptiles. Despite their docile reputation, adult Children's Pythons retain strong feeding instincts. On feeding days, your snake may be noticeably more alert and responsive to movement near its enclosure. It is wise to use feeding tongs and to avoid reaching into the enclosure with bare hands when the snake is in feeding mode, as even the most gentle snake can deliver a startled bite when it mistakes a warm hand for prey. Males may become restless and pace their enclosures during the breeding season, while females may display increased basking behavior. Simple variations in handling routine, occasional changes to enclosure layout, and providing novel objects to investigate during active periods all contribute to behavioral stimulation. A mentally engaged snake tends to display more natural behavior patterns and appears more content overall than one kept in an unchanging, minimally furnished enclosure.

Shedding & Skin Care

Adult Children's Pythons shed less frequently than juveniles, typically every six to eight weeks under normal conditions. The pre-shed phase is marked by a dulling of the skin color, clouding of the eyes to a bluish or milky hue, and often a reduction in appetite and increased time spent hiding. This phase lasts approximately seven to ten days before the snake sheds its skin in a single session.

Supporting clean sheds requires attention to humidity. When you notice the early signs of an approaching shed, increase enclosure humidity to approximately 60 to 70 percent. This can be achieved by misting the enclosure lightly, adding a damp moss hide, or partially covering ventilation to retain moisture. Avoid soaking the entire enclosure, as excessive moisture promotes bacterial and fungal growth.

After a shed, inspect the discarded skin to confirm it is complete. Check particularly for the eye caps, which should be visible as clear, dome-shaped structures in the head portion of the shed. If eye caps or tail tips are retained, a brief lukewarm soak and gentle manipulation with a damp cloth usually resolves the issue. Persistent retained sheds across multiple cycles suggest an underlying problem that needs to be addressed, whether environmental or medical.

The condition of your snake's skin between sheds is also worth monitoring. Healthy skin should be smooth, free of discoloration, and display the characteristic iridescent sheen of the species. Blisters, reddened scales along the belly, or areas of rough, raised texture can indicate scale rot or dermatitis, conditions that are typically caused by damp, unsanitary substrate conditions and require both environmental correction and veterinary treatment.
