Female wallabies possess a dual reproductive tract consisting of two lateral vaginae, two uteri, and a central birth canal called the median vagina or pseudovaginal canal. This anatomical arrangement allows for continuous reproductive cycling, as one uterus can carry a developing embryo while the other prepares for the next potential pregnancy. Males possess a bifurcated penis that corresponds to the female's dual vaginal structure, ensuring that sperm is delivered to both sides of the reproductive tract.
The estrous cycle in most wallaby species lasts approximately 28 to 35 days, though this varies somewhat between species and can be influenced by environmental conditions including photoperiod and nutritional status. Unlike many placental mammals, most wallaby species do not exhibit a discrete breeding season in captivity, remaining reproductively active year-round when adequate nutrition and environmental conditions are maintained. Some species, however, particularly those from temperate regions such as Bennett's wallaby, show a seasonal bias with increased breeding activity during late spring and summer, corresponding to the period that would ensure joey emergence during favorable weather conditions in their native range.
Estrous detection in female wallabies is challenging because outward behavioral signs of receptivity are often subtle. A female approaching estrus may show slight restlessness, increased interest in the male, and a tendency to allow the male to approach more closely than usual. The male, by contrast, becomes much more demonstrably interested in the female, following her persistently, sniffing her cloacal region, and performing a characteristic posture in which he stands tall, pulls his shoulders back, and vocalizes with clicking or clucking sounds. The male may also exhibit increased aggression toward rival males during this period, making it essential to ensure that only one intact male is housed with breeding females unless the enclosure is large enough to permit adequate spatial separation.
Post-copulation, the female may display brief behavioral changes including increased grooming of the cloacal area and temporary withdrawal from social activity, but these signs are not consistently observed. Determining whether mating has been successful is difficult without observing copulation directly, and even witnessed mating does not guarantee pregnancy. The short gestation period of approximately 28 to 36 days means that the first indication of a successful breeding may be the birth of the joey and its subsequent appearance as a slight bulge in the pouch, though this is only detectable by experienced observers in the weeks following the joey's attachment to the teat.
