Crabbing, the loud defensive vocalization that sugar gliders produce when startled or uncomfortable, is common in juvenile gliders, particularly those that are still building trust with their owners. This is not a sign of aggression but rather a fear response. Consistent, gentle handling will reduce crabbing over time as the glider learns to associate the owner with safety. Sugar gliders are arboreal animals that climb, leap, and glide in the wild, and their enclosure must allow for this natural movement. A tall cage with multiple levels, branches, ropes, and platforms gives the young glider ample opportunity to develop its physical skills and burn off the considerable energy that characterizes this life stage.

The cage should be constructed of powder-coated wire mesh with bar spacing no wider than half an inch to prevent the small juvenile from squeezing through or getting stuck. Avoid galvanized wire, as sugar gliders may chew on the bars and ingest zinc, which is toxic. The cage floor should be lined with a washable fleece liner rather than wood shavings or paper bedding, which can harbor bacteria and create respiratory irritation.

Enrichment items are essential for a juvenile glider's mental and physical health. Foraging toys that require the glider to work for its food, such as puzzle feeders or treat balls, stimulate natural behaviors and prevent boredom. Rotating toys and rearranging cage furniture every week or two keeps the environment novel and engaging. Exercise wheels designed specifically for sugar gliders, with a solid running surface and no center axle, provide an excellent outlet for nighttime energy.

Multiple sleeping pouches or nesting boxes should be placed throughout the cage, giving the glider options for where to rest during the day. In a colony setting, having more sleeping spots than gliders reduces competition and stress. All fabric items in the cage should be inspected regularly for loose threads or holes that could entangle small limbs.

Neutering Considerations

The question of whether to neuter a male sugar glider typically arises during the juvenile stage as the animal approaches sexual maturity, which can occur as early as four to five months out of pouch. Neutering is a significant decision with implications for the glider's behavior, health, and social dynamics within a colony, and it should be discussed thoroughly with an experienced exotic animal veterinarian.

Neutering eliminates the strong musky odor produced by intact male sugar gliders, which many owners find unpleasant. It also prevents unwanted breeding in mixed-gender colonies and can reduce territorial behaviors such as excessive scent marking and aggression toward other males. In colonies where an intact male is housed with females, neutering is often the most practical way to prevent continuous breeding, which places significant physical strain on the females.

The two most common neutering methods for sugar gliders are surgical castration and the placement of a hormone implant. Surgical castration is permanent and involves the removal of the testes, typically performed while the glider is under general anesthesia. The procedure is relatively quick in experienced hands, and most gliders recover within a few days.
