Adult spiny mice reach their full body weight of approximately forty to eighty grams by fourteen to sixteen weeks of age, at which point the dietary focus shifts from growth support to long-term maintenance and obesity prevention. The species' omnivorous ecology requires a varied diet that spans plant-based staples, insect protein, and small amounts of fresh produce. A high-quality commercial rodent pellet or lab block designed for mice provides a nutritionally balanced foundation and should constitute roughly fifty to sixty percent of the daily intake. Unlike some rodent species that hoard and selectively eat preferred items from seed mixes while ignoring less palatable but nutritionally important components, spiny mice tend to be more varied in their feeding habits, though individual preferences still exist and should be monitored.
Insect protein remains an important dietary component throughout adulthood, not merely as a growth supplement but as a reflection of the species' natural feeding ecology. In the wild, Acomys cahirinus actively hunts invertebrates including beetles, larvae, and small arthropods, and captive animals benefit from maintaining this foraging behavior. Offering live mealworms, small crickets, or dubia roach nymphs two to three times per week provides both nutrition and behavioral enrichment. The hunting and capture sequence engages the mouse's predatory instincts and provides mental stimulation that is difficult to replicate through other enrichment methods. Dried insects can be used as a supplement but should not entirely replace live offerings, as the behavioral value of the chase and capture is significant.
Fresh vegetables should be offered daily in small quantities appropriate to the colony size. Suitable options include romaine lettuce, endive, small pieces of carrot, broccoli florets, sugar snap peas, and dandelion greens. Fruit should be offered sparingly, no more than two to three times per week, as the high sugar content can contribute to obesity and may predispose individuals to diabetes, a condition to which some Acomys populations show elevated susceptibility. Small portions of apple, pear, blueberries, or melon are appropriate fruit choices. Remove uneaten fresh food within twelve to twenty-four hours to prevent spoilage and bacterial growth in the warm conditions that spiny mice require.
Obesity is one of the most prevalent and insidious health issues in adult captive spiny mice, particularly in colonies with ad libitum access to energy-dense seed mixes. An obese spiny mouse will show visible fat deposits around the neck and shoulders, a rounded rather than streamlined body profile, and reduced agility compared to colony mates of healthy weight. Preventing obesity requires portion control, limiting high-fat seed items such as sunflower seeds and peanuts to occasional treats rather than dietary staples, and ensuring that the enclosure provides ample space and opportunity for physical activity. A running wheel with a solid surface and minimum eight-inch diameter gives adults an important exercise outlet, and many spiny mice will run considerable distances each night when a suitable wheel is available.
