Skeletal growth during the juvenile phase is rapid and places significant demands on calcium and phosphorus metabolism. The long bones of the limbs lengthen considerably between four and eight months, and the skull undergoes reshaping as the permanent dentition replaces the deciduous teeth. The full set of 40 adult teeth is typically in place by five to six months of age, though the canines may continue to set and harden for several weeks beyond eruption. Keepers should be aware that the teething process can cause discomfort and irritability, and providing safe chewing materials such as untreated hardwood branches, raw marrow bones, and durable rubber toys helps alleviate soreness while satisfying the raccoon's instinctive need to gnaw.
The fur coat undergoes a significant transition during this stage. The relatively thin, soft juvenile pelage is gradually replaced by the denser, coarser guard hairs and thick underfur of the adult coat. This process begins around four months and is largely complete by the first autumn molt, which prepares the raccoon for winter. The quality and density of the winter coat are directly influenced by nutrition and overall health, so juveniles that are malnourished or chronically stressed may develop thin, patchy, or dull coats that offer inadequate insulation.
Muscular development parallels skeletal growth, and juvenile raccoons become noticeably stronger and more agile with each passing week. Their climbing ability, already impressive at weaning, becomes extraordinary during this period. A six-month-old raccoon can scale vertical surfaces, hang by its hind feet, and descend headfirst with a confidence that few mammals of comparable size can match. The forepaws, equipped with five highly sensitive digits and no webbing, develop remarkable grip strength and manipulative precision that enable the raccoon to open latches, turn knobs, unscrew jar lids, and dismantle objects with methodical persistence.
