Adult multimammate mice reach their full physical dimensions by approximately twelve to sixteen weeks of age, though body mass may continue to increase modestly through the first year as musculature fills out and fat reserves stabilize. A healthy adult Mastomys natalensis typically weighs between 40 and 80 grams, with males averaging heavier than females at the upper end of this range. Body length from nose to tail base measures approximately four to six inches, with the tail adding an additional three to five inches. The species is distinctly larger and more robust than the common house mouse, and first-time keepers accustomed to Mus musculus are often surprised by the multimammate mouse's comparatively substantial build.
The adult coat is a dense, soft pelage with the characteristic agouti patterning of the wild type: warm brown-gray on the dorsal surface transitioning to a paler cream or buff on the ventral side. Individual guard hairs display the banded pigmentation typical of agouti coloring, with darker tips and lighter bases creating the species' muted, earth-toned appearance. Captive breeding has produced some color variants including albino, argente, and occasional piebald individuals, though these remain uncommon outside laboratory colonies. The tail is sparsely furred, darker dorsally and lighter ventrally, and covered in fine annular scales. Unlike the tail of the domestic fancy mouse, the multimammate mouse's tail skin is moderately fragile and can deglove under rough handling, a characteristic that keepers must keep in mind during routine management.
Sexual dimorphism in adult multimammate mice extends beyond body mass. Males develop a broader head and more muscular neck as they mature, and their anogenital distance remains noticeably greater than that of females. The most distinctive anatomical feature of the species, and the origin of its common name, is the female's unusually high number of mammary glands. Adult females possess between eight and twelve pairs of nipples arranged along the ventral surface, far exceeding the five pairs typical of most murid rodents. This adaptation supports the species' characteristically large litters and is readily visible on the underside of the female when she is gently turned over for examination.
Dental health is a persistent consideration throughout the adult life of any rodent, and multimammate mice are no exception. The incisors grow continuously and must be worn down through gnawing activity. A diet that includes hard pellets, wood chew blocks, and fibrous materials typically keeps the incisors at an appropriate length. Overgrown incisors, which can result from malocclusion, injury, or a diet lacking adequate abrasive texture, interfere with eating and can lead to oral trauma and starvation if not corrected. Regular visual checks of the incisors during handling should be part of the keeper's routine health surveillance.
