A fully grown Mongolian jird reaches its adult weight of roughly sixty to one hundred and thirty grams by approximately twelve to fourteen weeks of age, and its nutritional needs shift from growth-oriented to maintenance-oriented at this point. The adult diet should center on a high-quality commercial gerbil or jird seed mix that provides a balanced ratio of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Unlike the juvenile phase where caloric density supports rapid growth, the adult phase requires careful portion control to prevent obesity, a condition that is increasingly common in captive jirds and contributes to a host of secondary health problems including fatty liver disease, cardiovascular strain, and reduced mobility.
Protein supplementation remains important for adult jirds but should be scaled back to two to three offerings per week rather than the near-daily schedule appropriate for growing juveniles. Suitable protein sources include mealworms, small crickets, a pinch of dried shrimp, or a thumbnail-sized portion of scrambled or hard-boiled egg. Fresh vegetables should be offered daily in small amounts, rotating through options such as broccoli, kale, carrot, parsley, and bell pepper to provide a spectrum of vitamins and minerals. Fresh produce should be removed from the enclosure within a few hours if uneaten to prevent spoilage and bacterial growth in the warm cage environment.
Timothy hay or orchard grass should be available at all times. While Mongolian jirds do not consume hay as a primary food source the way rabbits or guinea pigs do, they eat it in modest quantities that contribute valuable dietary fiber, and they use it extensively for nest construction and enrichment. The act of pulling, shredding, and weaving hay into nest structures provides both physical exercise and cognitive engagement that complements the nutritional benefit.
Food storage behavior, known as hoarding or caching, is a prominent feature of adult jird behavior and should be accommodated rather than disrupted. Jirds will carry seeds and other food items to preferred locations within the enclosure, often burying them in substrate or tucking them into tunnel systems. This behavior is instinctive and psychologically important. Keepers who repeatedly remove cached food during cleaning may inadvertently increase stress levels in their jirds. A practical approach involves leaving established food caches undisturbed during routine spot cleaning and only removing cached items during full substrate changes, which should occur approximately once every three to four weeks.
