Brief scuffles and chasing are normal parts of the establishment of social hierarchy and should not trigger premature intervention, but sustained biting, rolling fights, or one animal cornering the other with intent to harm requires immediate separation and reassessment. Providing the enclosure with multiple hiding spots, two food sources, and two water bottles reduces resource competition during the initial cohabitation period and gives each animal escape routes that prevent cornering.

The female duprasi cycles into estrus approximately every four to six days, and receptive behavior is the primary indicator that mating is imminent. A female in estrus will display a characteristic lordosis posture when the male approaches, flattening her spine and raising her hindquarters to facilitate mounting. She may also engage in a rapid vibrating movement of the hindquarters and produce soft vocalizations. The male responds with investigative sniffing of the female's anogenital region, followed by mounting attempts. Successful copulation consists of multiple brief mounts separated by short intervals, and the entire mating sequence may repeat several times over the course of an evening. The keeper does not need to intervene during mating but should remain available to separate the pair if the interaction shifts from reproductive to aggressive.

After confirmed mating, the decision of whether to leave the pair together or separate them depends on the individuals' compatibility and the breeder's management philosophy. Some pairs coexist peacefully throughout gestation and even after the pups are born, with the male showing no aggression toward the litter. Other females become increasingly intolerant of the male as pregnancy advances and may attack him aggressively in the days before delivery. Monitoring the pair's interactions throughout gestation allows the keeper to make an informed judgment, but erring on the side of separating the male a few days before the expected delivery date is the safer default if any doubt exists about his behavior around newborns.

Gestation and Prenatal Care

The gestation period for the duprasi is approximately 19 to 22 days, which is relatively short even by small rodent standards and demands attentive prenatal husbandry from the moment breeding is confirmed or suspected. Nutritional support during gestation is critical for fetal development and the mother's ability to sustain the pregnancy without depleting her own reserves. The pregnant female's diet should be enriched with additional protein, beginning as soon as pregnancy is suspected. Small mealworms, boiled egg, and high-protein pellets offered daily provide the amino acids required for fetal tissue construction. Calcium supplementation through a cuttlebone or powdered calcium carbonate mixed with food supports skeletal development of the pups and helps prevent the mother from drawing down her own skeletal calcium stores, which can lead to metabolic bone disease or eclampsia in severe cases. Handling of the pregnant female should cease entirely during the final three to four days, as the stress of being picked up and restrained may contribute to complications during delivery. Loud noises, sudden environmental changes, and the introduction of new cage mates or enclosure furniture should all be avoided. The goal is to provide a stable, quiet, warm environment in which the female feels secure enough to deliver and begin nursing without distraction or threat.

Delivery and Immediate Postpartum Period

Delivery in the duprasi typically occurs during the nighttime or early morning hours, consistent with the species' nocturnal activity pattern, and keepers frequently discover the new litter during their first check of the enclosure in the morning. A normal delivery is completed within one to three hours, with pups arriving at intervals of five to fifteen minutes. The mother manages the entire process independently, positioning herself in the nest, delivering each pup, severing the umbilical cord, consuming the placenta, and cleaning the neonate through vigorous licking. Under normal circumstances, no human intervention is needed or appropriate during delivery, and attempting to assist can cause far more harm than benefit by disrupting the mother's instinctive behaviors.

Litter size in the duprasi typically ranges from three to six pups, though both smaller and larger litters have been documented. Exceptionally large litters of eight or nine pups present challenges for the mother in terms of milk supply and nest management, and keepers should be prepared for the possibility that not all pups in a very large litter will survive the neonatal period. First-time mothers are statistically more likely to experience complications including prolonged labor, failure to clean one or more pups, and partial or complete litter cannibalization. While these outcomes are distressing, they are within the normal range of reproductive variation for the species and do not necessarily predict the mother's performance with subsequent litters.

Dystocia, or difficult birth, is uncommon in duprasi but can occur, particularly in first-time mothers, very young breeders, or animals carrying unusually large pups. Signs that delivery has stalled include visible straining without the appearance of a pup for more than 45 minutes to an hour, bloody discharge without pup delivery, the mother appearing exhausted or distressed, or a pup that is partially delivered but stuck in the birth canal. Any of these situations constitutes a veterinary emergency, and the keeper should contact an exotic animal veterinarian immediately. The first 48 hours after delivery are a period of critical importance during which the mother establishes nursing, bonds with the litter, and the pups' survival trajectory is largely determined. The nest should remain completely undisturbed during this time. Food and water should be positioned as close to the nest entrance as possible so the mother can eat and drink without leaving the pups for extended periods. Monitoring from a distance is appropriate, with the keeper looking for the mother spending the majority of her time in the nest, emerging periodically to eat and drink, and returning promptly. Responsible Breeding Ethics

The decision to breed duprasi should be made thoughtfully and with full consideration of the responsibilities involved. Unlike dogs and cats, for which extensive rescue and rehoming networks exist, small exotic mammals like the duprasi have a much smaller community of knowledgeable adopters, and finding appropriate permanent homes for an entire litter can be genuinely difficult. Before pairing animals for breeding, the responsible keeper should have confirmed homes for all potential offspring, or should be prepared to house them long-term if suitable adopters do not materialize. Breeding without a plan for the pups is a primary driver of small animal abandonment and surrender to shelters that are often poorly equipped to house and rehome exotic species.

The frequency of breeding is an important welfare consideration for the female duprasi. While the species is physiologically capable of producing multiple litters per year, back-to-back breeding places enormous physiological strain on the mother, depleting calcium reserves, reducing body condition, and shortening lifespan. Responsible breeders allow a minimum rest period of three to four months between litters, during which the female can recover body condition, rebuild fat reserves in her tail, and return to baseline health before being asked to sustain another pregnancy and lactation cycle. Age limits for breeding deserve careful attention at both ends of the spectrum.
