The duprasi reaches sexual maturity between eight and twelve weeks of age, but physiological maturity does not equate to breeding readiness. Responsible breeders wait until both the male and female are at least four to five months old and have reached full adult body weight before attempting to pair them. Breeding females younger than four months risks complications during pregnancy and delivery because the pelvis and reproductive tract may not be fully developed, while males younger than this age may lack the behavioral maturity to court effectively without provoking aggression from the female.
Selecting breeding stock involves evaluating several criteria beyond basic health. Both animals should be of known lineage, or at minimum acquired from a breeder who can provide information about the parents' health history. Duprasi from lines with documented longevity, sound temperament, and freedom from chronic dental or respiratory conditions are preferable candidates. Physical assessment should confirm that both animals are at appropriate body weight, with a plump and well-formed fat tail indicating adequate caloric reserves, clear eyes free of discharge, healthy coats without patches or parasites, and properly aligned incisors. Animals with visible malocclusion, chronic respiratory symptoms, or recurring skin conditions should not be bred, as these traits may have heritable components.
Temperament plays a significant role in breeding pair selection for the duprasi. While the species is generally docile, individual personality varies, and pairing two animals that are exceptionally nervous or aggressive increases the likelihood of failed introductions and poor maternal behavior. Ideally, the female should have a calm, confident demeanor, as high-strung or fearful females are more prone to cannibalizing their litters or abandoning pups. The male should be socially experienced enough to read the female's signals during courtship and retreat when she signals unreceptiveness, rather than persisting and provoking a defensive attack.
Genetic diversity is an important consideration in duprasi breeding programs, as the captive population in many countries descends from a relatively limited founder stock. Inbreeding depression can manifest as reduced litter sizes, increased neonatal mortality, weakened immune function, and shortened lifespan. Breeders should avoid pairing closely related individuals such as siblings, parent-offspring combinations, or cousins, and should seek to introduce unrelated bloodlines when possible. Maintaining pedigree records, even simple ones, helps track lineage across generations and prevents inadvertent inbreeding as animals are distributed to new homes and potentially return to breeding programs.
