Choosing a diet with the lowest feasible carbohydrate content is a reasonable preventive measure based on current understanding.
Raw and whole-prey feeding has become increasingly popular among ferret keepers who wish to provide a diet that more closely mirrors what the wild polecat ancestor would consume. A properly formulated raw diet consists of approximately 80 percent muscle meat, 10 percent edible bone, 5 percent liver, and 5 percent other secreting organs, sourced from a variety of poultry, rabbit, and other appropriate prey species. Whole prey items such as day-old chicks or mice provide the most nutritionally complete single food item, though many owners find them aesthetically challenging.
