Wood Turtle hatchlings, classified as Glyptemys insculpta, emerge from their underground nests in late August through October after an incubation period of roughly 47 to 69 days depending on soil temperature and moisture conditions. The neonates are remarkably small at hatching, measuring approximately one to one and a half inches in carapace length, and they weigh between six and twelve grams. Unlike many aquatic turtle species that make an immediate dash for water, Wood Turtle hatchlings often remain in or near the nest cavity for several hours to a full day as they straighten their plastrons and absorb the last traces of yolk from the internalized yolk sac. Keepers who are incubating eggs artificially should resist the temptation to extract hatchlings from the incubation medium prematurely, as the yolk absorption process is biologically essential and interrupting it can lead to umbilical infections or nutritional deficits in the first week.
The residual yolk sac provides the hatchling with its initial energy reserves, immune factors, and hydration during the transition from egg to free-living animal. This structure is visible as a small, soft protrusion on the ventral surface of the plastron and typically retracts fully within 24 to 48 hours of emergence. During this period, the hatchling should be kept in a clean, damp environment such as a shallow container lined with moistened unbleached paper towels or damp sphagnum moss. The container should be maintained at 72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit and kept in a quiet, dimly lit location to minimize stress. Handling should be avoided entirely until the yolk sac has been fully absorbed and the umbilical site has sealed.
Once the yolk sac has retracted, a brief visual health assessment is appropriate. A healthy Wood Turtle hatchling will display a well-formed carapace with clearly defined marginal scutes, bright and responsive eyes, coordinated limb movement, and an active head-withdrawal reflex when gently approached. The plastron should be flat or nearly flat, not bulging or asymmetrical, and the umbilical scar should appear as a clean, closed line with no redness, swelling, or discharge. Hatchlings that trail yolk material, exhibit a persistently open umbilicus, or show limb deformities should be evaluated by a veterinarian experienced with chelonians as soon as possible.
The transition to the initial rearing enclosure should occur within the first two days, once the hatchling is mobile and the umbilical site is sealed. This transfer should be performed calmly and without excessive handling. Place the hatchling gently into the prepared habitat and allow it to explore without interference for at least 24 hours before offering food or conducting any further interaction. Wood Turtles are among the most intelligent of North American turtle species, and even neonates exhibit exploratory behavior and spatial learning very early in life, making a low-stress introduction to their environment critically important for long-term behavioral development.
