Veiled Chameleon eggs, after an incubation period of roughly 150 to 200 days at temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, produce hatchlings that are startlingly small yet remarkably precocious. Each neonate measures approximately three to four inches in total length, including the tail, and emerges from the egg encased in a thin membrane that it must rupture independently. The hatching process may take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, and keepers should resist the temptation to intervene. Assisting a hatchling out of its egg can cause fatal damage to the yolk sac or umbilical connection, and animals that cannot complete the process unassisted often have developmental abnormalities that would compromise their long-term viability regardless.
Once free of the egg, the hatchling typically remains motionless for a period while it absorbs the residual yolk material attached to its ventral surface. This yolk provides essential nutrients, hydration, and passive immune factors that sustain the neonate through its first day or two before it begins feeding. The umbilical site should close cleanly within the first twelve to twenty-four hours. Any trailing yolk tissue, redness, swelling, or discharge from the umbilical area is abnormal and warrants immediate veterinary evaluation by a reptile-experienced practitioner, as neonatal infections in chameleons progress with alarming speed due to their small body mass.
The hatchling's enclosure must be fully prepared before eggs begin pipping, as a seamless transfer minimizes stress during this vulnerable window. Veiled Chameleon hatchlings are arboreal from the moment they emerge, and unlike many terrestrial reptile hatchlings, they will immediately attempt to climb any vertical surface available. Placing the neonate directly into a properly outfitted enclosure with fine branches, artificial vines, and small-leafed live plants allows it to orient itself vertically and begin thermoregulating within minutes of introduction. The enclosure should be no larger than a well-planted twelve by twelve by eighteen inch screen cage for the first several weeks, as an oversized habitat makes it difficult for the tiny animal to locate food and water.
During these first hours, careful observation without physical handling is essential. A healthy hatchling will display a bright green base coloration, grip branches firmly with its zygodactyl feet, and begin scanning its surroundings with independently rotating eyes almost immediately. The tail should curl into a tight coil or wrap securely around perching surfaces. Hatchlings that fall repeatedly, appear unable to grip, display a dark or mottled stress coloration that does not resolve after settling, or keep their eyes closed for prolonged periods are exhibiting warning signs that demand prompt investigation of environmental conditions and potentially veterinary assessment.
