Aggression can become an issue in multi-turtle enclosures during the adult years, particularly among males or in mixed-sex groups. Males may harass females with persistent courtship behavior, including face fanning and biting at the female's head and limbs. This behavior, while natural, can cause significant stress and physical injury to the female if she cannot escape. Thin, translucent pieces of the outer shell layer will periodically lift and peel away, revealing fresh, vibrant scutes beneath. This process should happen gradually and naturally. Skin shedding also occurs in painted turtles, though less dramatically than in snakes or lizards.
