When to Worry

For example, hatchlings may rest motionless for extended periods, float at the water's surface with limbs extended, or refuse food for a day or two after being introduced to a new enclosure. These are typical adjustment behaviors and rarely indicate a problem.

However, certain signs warrant immediate attention. A hatchling that has not eaten for more than a week despite appropriate temperatures and food offerings may be ill or severely stressed. Persistent lethargy—where the turtle shows no interest in exploring, basking, or responding to stimuli—is another red flag. Healthy hatchlings should demonstrate curiosity and activity during daylight hours, even if they also spend considerable time resting.

Physical symptoms that require urgent veterinary care include soft or deformed shells, swollen or closed eyes, nasal discharge, open wounds, and any unusual growths or discolorations.
