Hermann's Tortoises reach sexual maturity based on size rather than a strict age, though age plays a contributing role. Males typically mature earlier than females, often becoming reproductively capable around four to six years of age when they reach approximately four inches in carapace length. Females generally mature between six and ten years of age and should ideally be at least five to six inches in carapace length before being bred, as smaller females face higher risks of egg binding and complications during laying.
Sex determination in Hermann's Tortoises becomes reliable once the animals reach three to four inches in length. Males display a longer, thicker tail with the cloacal opening positioned farther from the body, a slightly concave plastron that aids in mounting, and a more pronounced supracaudal scute that curves downward. Females have shorter, stubbier tails, a flat plastron, and a broader, more rounded body shape overall. Before these secondary characteristics develop, accurate sexing is extremely difficult without endoscopic examination.
Both male and female breeding candidates should be in excellent health before any pairing. A pre-breeding veterinary examination with fecal screening ensures that neither animal carries a significant parasite burden or underlying health condition that could complicate reproduction. The female should be at a healthy body weight with adequate fat and calcium reserves to support egg production, and the male should be active, alert, and displaying normal behavioral patterns.
Brumation plays an important role in reproductive readiness. The hormonal cycling triggered by seasonal dormancy primes both sexes for mating activity upon emergence. Tortoises that have been denied brumation for extended periods may show reduced reproductive drive or fertility. For breeders planning to produce offspring, allowing both animals to undergo a full brumation cycle in the months preceding the intended breeding season typically yields the best results.
