This biting behavior, while normal, can cause injury to the female if the pair is left together for extended periods without supervision, particularly if the male is significantly larger or more persistent than the female is willing to tolerate.

Mating typically occurs most frequently in the weeks following emergence from brumation, when hormonal levels peak. At lower temperatures, the process takes longer. Humidity should be maintained at approximately 70 to 80 percent within the incubation container, which can be monitored with a small hygrometer. The vermiculite or perlite substrate should feel damp but not wet to the touch, and water should be added sparingly if conditions become too dry.

Candling the eggs with a small, bright flashlight after the first two to three weeks can help determine fertility. Fertile eggs will show visible blood vessel development and a darkening embryo, while infertile eggs remain uniformly translucent or develop mold. Infertile or decomposing eggs should be removed promptly to prevent contamination of viable eggs. As hatching approaches, the eggs may develop small beads of moisture on the surface and the shell may begin to dimple slightly, both of which are normal signs that the hatchling is preparing to emerge.

Postpartum Care

The egg-laying process is physically demanding for female Hermann's Tortoises, and postpartum recovery requires attentive care. Immediately after laying, the female should be offered a long, warm soak to rehydrate and help her void any remaining waste. Egg production draws heavily on calcium reserves, and the female's bones and shell may be temporarily depleted. Increasing calcium supplementation to daily dusting for the first two to three weeks after laying helps replenish these reserves.

Appetite typically returns quickly after laying, and the female should be offered generous portions of high-quality, calcium-rich greens. Dandelion greens, turnip greens, and endive are particularly good choices during this recovery period. If the female laid multiple clutches during the season, cumulative depletion can be significant, and she may need several weeks of enhanced nutrition before returning to her normal feeding schedule.

Monitor the female carefully for signs of retained eggs or egg binding in the days following laying. Symptoms include continued restless digging behavior, lethargy, loss of appetite, straining, or swelling around the hind limbs and tail base. If egg binding is suspected, veterinary intervention is necessary, as the condition can become life-threatening if untreated. Radiographs can confirm the presence of retained eggs, and treatment may range from medical management to surgical intervention depending on severity.

If the female is housed with a male, consider separating them for a period after laying to give her time to recover without the stress of continued courtship and mating attempts. Financial realism is essential for anyone considering tortoise breeding. The costs of veterinary care, incubation equipment, additional enclosure space, electricity, food, substrate, and the time investment required for proper hatchling care are substantial.
