An adult Tomato Frog, Dyscophus antongilii, reaches full maturity at approximately 18 to 24 months of age, at which point the animal has achieved its adult body size, full coloration, and reproductive capability. Adult females are the larger sex, reaching three and a half to four inches in snout-to-vent length and weighing between 40 and 60 grams when in healthy body condition. Males are noticeably smaller, typically measuring two and a half to three inches and weighing 25 to 35 grams. This pronounced sexual size dimorphism is one of the most reliable methods of sex determination in the species and is complemented by the female's deeper, more saturated red-orange coloration compared to the male's more subdued yellow-orange tones.
The prime adult years represent the most stable and least demanding period of Tomato Frog husbandry, as the animal's rapid growth phase has concluded and its metabolic requirements have settled into a predictable, manageable pattern. An adult Tomato Frog in well-maintained conditions is a remarkably hardy and long-lived animal, with captive lifespans consistently reaching six to eight years and occasional individuals surviving beyond ten years with exceptional care. The species' hardiness should not, however, be confused with low maintenance, as consistent attention to environmental parameters, feeding quality, and health monitoring remains essential throughout the adult lifespan.
Adult Tomato Frogs are quintessentially sedentary animals. In the wild, they occupy shallow burrows in leaf litter and loose soil near temporary pools, drainage ditches, and forest clearings in northeastern Madagascar, emerging at dusk to sit motionless and ambush passing invertebrate prey. This sit-and-wait predatory strategy means that a healthy adult Tomato Frog spends the vast majority of its time completely still, and keepers accustomed to more active species should understand that prolonged immobility is normal species-typical behavior rather than a sign of illness or environmental inadequacy.
The species' vivid coloration serves as aposematic warning to potential predators, advertising the frog's ability to secrete a thick, white, irritating mucus from specialized skin glands when seized or roughly handled. This defensive secretion is produced in greater volume and potency by adult frogs than by juveniles and is sufficiently irritating to deter most predators, including snakes and small mammals. In a captive setting, the defensive secretion is most commonly triggered by aggressive or prolonged handling, and its regular occurrence should be taken as an indication that the frog is being disturbed more than is appropriate for the species.
