Distinguishing the irreversible decline that signals a Tiger Salamander is approaching the end of its life from treatable illness or reversible husbandry problems is one of the most difficult assessments a keeper will face. The challenge is compounded by the species' naturally secretive behavior, which means that significant deterioration may occur underground in the animal's burrow before it becomes visible to even an attentive keeper. Terminal decline in a Tiger Salamander is generally characterized by a progressive, multi-system failure that does not respond to husbandry correction or veterinary treatment, distinguishing it from acute illness or a single-organ problem that may be manageable.
The hallmark of terminal decline is a sustained refusal to eat that extends beyond what can be attributed to seasonal variation, post-shedding fasting, or environmental factors. A senior Tiger Salamander that has not eaten voluntarily for three to four consecutive weeks despite being offered a variety of preferred prey items at optimal temperatures, and whose enclosure conditions have been verified as appropriate, is exhibiting a degree of anorexia that warrants serious concern. This prolonged feeding refusal, when accompanied by progressive weight loss visible as a thinning tail base, increasingly prominent pelvic and shoulder bones, and a general loss of muscular fullness along the trunk, suggests that the animal's metabolic systems are shutting down in a manner that food alone cannot reverse.
Postural and locomotor changes provide additional diagnostic information. A Tiger Salamander that is no longer able to hold its body in a normal posture, dragging its ventral surface along the substrate rather than lifting the trunk clear on its limbs, or lying on its side for extended periods without self-correcting, has experienced a level of muscular or neurological deterioration that is rarely reversible. Similarly, an animal that has ceased burrowing entirely and instead lies motionless on the substrate surface, even when exposed and uncovered, has lost the behavioral drive that is most fundamental to the species' identity.
Skin condition often deteriorates markedly during terminal decline. The skin may become chronically dry despite adequate humidity, develop persistent discoloration or areas of pallor, and lose the ability to shed cleanly. Incomplete sheds that result in retained skin fragments adhering to the body despite appropriate humidity and soaking opportunities indicate that the dermal regeneration cycle is failing. The mucous coat may become irregular, with some areas producing excessive slime while others remain conspicuously dry. These integumentary changes reflect systemic compromise rather than a localized skin problem and generally do not respond to topical treatment.
