The Spotted Salamander reaches full physical maturity at approximately two to three years of age, though growth continues at a diminishing rate for several years beyond that point. A fully mature adult typically measures between six and ten inches in total length, with females tending to be slightly heavier-bodied than males of equivalent length due to the space required for egg production. The adult body plan is robust and cylindrical, with a broad, flattened head, well-developed jaw musculature, and strong, proportionally stout limbs with four toes on the front feet and five on the rear. The tail is thick and rounded, functioning as a critical fat and moisture reserve that sustains the animal through brumation and periods of reduced food intake.
The coloration of a mature Spotted Salamander is among the most striking of any North American amphibian. The dorsal surface is a deep, glossy blue-black to dark gray, marked with two irregular rows of bright yellow to orange-yellow spots that run from the top of the head to the tip of the tail. The spot pattern is individually unique and remains consistent throughout the animal's life, functioning much like a fingerprint for identification purposes. Some individuals display spots that are predominantly yellow, others carry vivid orange markings, and occasional specimens exhibit a combination of both colors. The ventral surface is a uniform pale gray to slate lavender, unmarked, and slightly rougher in texture than the smooth dorsal skin.
Sexual dimorphism in adult Spotted Salamanders is subtle but identifiable with experience. Males develop a noticeably swollen cloacal region during the breeding season, with the vent area becoming distinctly protuberant compared to the flatter, less conspicuous vent of the female. Outside of breeding condition, males tend to be slightly more slender-bodied than females and may have marginally longer tails relative to body length. These differences are modest enough that reliable sexing requires comparison of multiple individuals side by side and is most confidently performed during the late winter and early spring when breeding condition amplifies the physical distinctions.
The skin of the adult animal is a complex organ that deserves particular attention from the keeper. It is richly supplied with mucous glands that maintain a thin, moist film essential for cutaneous respiration, and with granular glands that produce a milky, mildly toxic secretion concentrated on the dorsal surface and particularly along the tail. This secretion, which contains steroid alkaloids, serves as a chemical defense against predators and is released when the animal is severely stressed or physically threatened. The skin also houses chromatophores responsible for the species' coloration and plays a direct role in osmoregulation, immune defense through antimicrobial peptide production, and respiratory gas exchange.
