The Slimy Salamander, Plethodon glutinosus, belongs to the family Plethodontidae and is one of the relatively few salamander species that undergoes direct development, meaning the embryos complete their entire larval transformation within the egg and emerge as fully formed, miniature terrestrial salamanders rather than aquatic larvae. This reproductive strategy eliminates the free-swimming tadpole stage entirely. The hatchlings are remarkably small at emergence, typically measuring between fifteen and twenty-two millimeters in total length, and they closely resemble adults in overall body plan despite their diminutive size. Each hatchling emerges from a grape-sized, gelatinous egg that the female has guarded in a subterranean or crevice nest site for a period of roughly two to three months.
During the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours after emergence, the hatchlings remain near or within the nest cavity alongside their mother. The female Slimy Salamander provides direct parental care by coiling around the egg clutch throughout incubation and continues to attend the neonates briefly after hatching. She does not feed the young, but her physical presence helps regulate the moisture environment immediately around the hatchlings and may offer some passive protection against small invertebrate predators such as beetle larvae and centipedes. Keepers who are fortunate enough to observe a nesting event in captivity should resist any urge to disturb the nest or separate the hatchlings from the mother during this initial window.
The neonate Slimy Salamander is entirely lungless, as are all members of the Plethodontidae. Gas exchange occurs exclusively through the skin and the lining of the mouth, a process known as cutaneous and buccopharyngeal respiration. This physiological reality makes moisture the single most critical environmental factor for a newborn. Even brief exposure to dry conditions, low humidity, or direct airflow can desiccate a hatchling's skin to the point where respiration is compromised within minutes. Every aspect of the neonate enclosure must be designed around maintaining a consistently moist microenvironment without creating standing water that could drown an animal this small.
A healthy hatchling at emergence will display a deep black dorsal coloration with scattered white or silvery flecks that are smaller and less distinct than those seen in adults. The belly is typically dark gray. The animal should be responsive to gentle vibration, retreat quickly when exposed to light, and exhibit coordinated limb movement when placed on a moist surface. Hatchlings that appear listless, fail to right themselves when turned onto their backs, or show any visible lesions on the skin should be isolated in a separate, meticulously clean container with dampened unbleached paper towels and observed closely for twenty-four hours before any further intervention.
