The adult Red-Spotted Newt, scientifically Notophthalmus viridescens, is a permanently aquatic animal that has completed its remarkable transition from the brilliant orange terrestrial eft back to a life spent entirely in water. The adult body plan is optimized for aquatic existence: the skin has become smooth and permeable to facilitate cutaneous respiration underwater, the tail has broadened into a laterally compressed paddle edged with a dorsal and ventral fin keel that provides efficient propulsion, and the limbs, while still functional, serve primarily for walking along the substrate and maneuvering around structures rather than for swimming. Adult coloration is a muted olive-green to yellowish-brown on the dorsal surface with a pale yellow ventrum speckled with fine black dots, and the signature row of red spots bordered by black rings persists along each flank as a reminder of the species' potent chemical defenses.
Sexual dimorphism becomes clearly evident in fully mature adults. Males develop enlarged hind limbs with roughened black nuptial pads on the inner surfaces of the thighs and toe tips during the breeding season, and their tails become proportionally broader and more heavily keeled than those of females. Males also tend to be slightly smaller overall than females but more robustly built through the hindquarters. Females are generally larger-bodied with a rounder, fuller abdomen and lack the nuptial pad development and pronounced tail keeling seen in males. These differences are useful for determining the sex composition of a group when establishing a colony.
Adult Red-Spotted Newts are remarkably long-lived for their size, with captive specimens routinely reaching 12 to 15 years of age when maintained properly, and some individuals reported to exceed 20 years. This longevity means that acquiring an adult newt represents a significant commitment of time and resources, and the decisions made regarding housing, nutrition, and environmental management during the prime adult years directly influence both the quality and duration of the animal's life. Unlike many short-lived amphibians where husbandry shortcuts may not manifest as problems during the animal's natural lifespan, Red-Spotted Newts live long enough for the consequences of suboptimal care to become apparent.
The adult stage typically begins when the eft completes its second metamorphosis and transitions back to aquatic life, usually between two and five years of age depending on individual variation and captive conditions. Prime adulthood extends from this point through approximately eight to ten years of age, during which the animal should be at its most robust, active, and resilient. Maintaining optimal conditions throughout this extended prime period establishes the physiological reserves that support the animal through the inevitable challenges of advanced age.
