A Plated Lizard hatchling of the genus Gerrhosaurus enters the world as a small but surprisingly well-formed reptile, typically measuring between three and four inches in total length. The hatching process itself can be prolonged, sometimes spanning six to twelve hours from the first pip mark to full emergence. Keepers should resist the natural impulse to assist the hatchling during this process, as premature intervention risks tearing the delicate yolk sac connection or introducing bacteria through the still-open umbilical site. The egg tooth, a small calcified projection on the tip of the snout, is used to score the leathery eggshell, and the hatchling may rest for extended periods between bouts of activity as it works its way free.
Once the hatchling has fully emerged, its immediate priority is completing the absorption of the residual yolk material attached to the ventral surface. This yolk provides critical nutrition, hydration, and passive immune factors that sustain the neonate during the transition from egg to independent life. The hatchling should be left undisturbed in the incubation container until it is actively moving and the umbilical site has sealed. Attempting to relocate the animal while the yolk is still partially external can result in rupture, hemorrhage, and subsequent infection that carries a very poor prognosis at this age.
The receiving enclosure should be fully prepared and thermally stabilized well before the anticipated hatch date. Plated Lizard eggs typically incubate for 90 to 120 days depending on species and incubation temperature, giving keepers ample time to establish and fine-tune the neonatal setup. Every environmental parameter, including basking surface temperature, ambient gradient, humidity levels, and hide placement, should be verified with calibrated digital instruments before the hatchling is introduced. A last-minute setup introduces variables and stressors that compound the inherent fragility of the neonatal period.
A healthy hatchling will display coordinated limb movement, active tongue-flicking, clear and fully open eyes, and smooth, intact skin with well-defined plated scalation. The characteristic rectangular osteoderms that give the genus its common name are already visible on hatchlings, though they lack the hardness and definition they will develop with maturity. Any hatchling that cannot right itself when placed on its back, trails yolk material from the umbilicus, has clouded or sunken eyes, or displays asymmetric limb function should be evaluated by a veterinarian experienced with reptiles as soon as possible. Early intervention during the first day dramatically improves outcomes compared to delayed treatment.
