Conversely, males may subject females to persistent, unwanted courtship behavior that involves rapid vibration of the elongated foreclaws in front of the female's face, a natural behavior that becomes stressful to the female when she cannot escape the male's attention in a confined enclosure.

If multiple adults are housed together, the enclosure must be spacious enough to provide each individual with its own basking site, swimming territory, and retreat area where it can avoid visual contact with tankmates. As a practical guideline, adding a second adult turtle to an enclosure requires at least a fifty to seventy-five percent increase in water volume beyond what the first turtle would need alone, along with the addition of at least one extra basking platform positioned so that it is not visible from the primary basking area. Housing Map Turtles with other species introduces additional complexity and is generally not recommended for the average keeper. While Map Turtles can theoretically coexist with other similarly sized, non-aggressive aquatic turtle species, differences in temperature preferences, dietary needs, disease susceptibility, and behavioral patterns make mixed-species housing a management challenge that increases the risk of problems for all individuals involved. Fish can be housed with adult Map Turtles, but any fish in the enclosure should be considered potential food rather than permanent residents, as Map Turtles are opportunistic predators that will consume any fish they can catch.

Monitoring cohabiting adults for signs of chronic social stress is essential and requires familiarity with the baseline behavior of each individual. Signs of social stress in a subordinate Map Turtle include persistent avoidance of the basking area, refusal to eat in the presence of the dominant individual, spending disproportionate time hiding behind decor or in corners, and the development of stress-related health problems such as recurrent respiratory infections or unexplained weight loss.
