The adult stage represents the longest phase of the gecko's life, potentially spanning well over a decade with proper care. During these prime years, the focus shifts from supporting rapid growth to maintaining optimal health through consistent, attentive husbandry.

Adult leopard geckos are relatively hardy when their environmental needs are met, but complacency is the most common threat to their well-being. Enclosure temperatures, humidity levels, and supplementation schedules should be checked and maintained with the same diligence applied during the hatchling and juvenile stages. A reliable thermostat regulating the heat source is non-negotiable, and thermometers on both the warm and cool sides of the enclosure should be monitored regularly.

Annual veterinary wellness exams are recommended for adult leopard geckos, even when the animal appears healthy. A reptile-experienced veterinarian can perform fecal tests for parasites, evaluate body condition, and identify subtle health changes that may not be obvious to the keeper. Establishing a baseline of normal values for your individual gecko makes it easier to detect deviations over time.

Keep a care log that tracks weight, feeding patterns, shedding dates, and any behavioral changes. Adults typically shed every four to eight weeks, and any significant deviation from an established pattern is worth noting. Weight should remain stable within a few grams month to month. Unexplained weight loss or gain warrants a closer look at diet, health, and environmental conditions.

Nutrition at Maturity

Adult leopard geckos require less frequent feeding than juveniles, as their growth has plateaued and their caloric needs are reduced. Most healthy adults thrive on feedings every two to three days, consuming roughly five to eight appropriately sized insects per session. The tail serves as the primary indicator of nutritional status: a plump, rounded tail indicates adequate fat reserves, while a thin tail signals underfeeding or illness.

Dietary variety remains important throughout adulthood. Rotate between staple feeders such as crickets, dubia roaches, and mealworms, supplemented with occasional treats like silkworms, black soldier fly larvae, and the very rare waxworm. Superworms can be offered to large adults but should be used in moderation due to their high fat content and tough chitin. All feeder insects should be gut-loaded with nutritious vegetables and grains before being offered.

Calcium supplementation continues but at a slightly reduced frequency compared to the juvenile stage. Dust feeders with calcium without D3 at every other feeding, calcium with D3 once per week, and a reptile multivitamin once per week. A dish of plain calcium powder left in the enclosure allows the gecko to self-supplement as needed. Monitor for signs of over-supplementation, such as chalky deposits around the mouth or joints, and adjust accordingly.

Obesity is a genuine concern in adult leopard geckos, particularly those that are overfed high-fat insects or receive too many treats. An obese gecko will develop visible fat deposits in the armpits, along the sides of the body, and an excessively swollen tail. Obesity shortens lifespan and increases the risk of hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition. If your gecko is overweight, reduce feeding frequency and eliminate high-fat feeder items until a healthy body condition is restored.

Enclosure & Enrichment

An adult leopard gecko should be housed in an enclosure of at least 20 gallons, though 30 to 40 gallons is increasingly recommended by experienced keepers as the standard for promoting natural behaviors and providing adequate space. The enclosure should continue to offer a clear temperature gradient with a warm side floor temperature of 88 to 92 degrees Fahrenheit and a cool side in the mid to upper 70s. Nighttime temperatures can drop into the low 70s without issue.

Enrichment plays a significant role in the quality of life for an adult leopard gecko. While these animals spend much of their daytime hours resting in hides, their evening activity periods benefit greatly from an interesting and varied environment. Cork bark, rock formations, low branches, excavation-style substrate areas, and rearranged decor all provide mental stimulation. Rotating enrichment items periodically keeps the environment novel and encourages exploration.

The three-hide minimum remains essential: warm, cool, and humid. Adults that do not have access to a properly maintained humid hide are prone to shedding difficulties, which can become chronic if not addressed. The humid hide substrate should be checked and moistened daily, and the entire hide should be cleaned and replaced regularly to prevent mold or bacterial growth. Some keepers use multiple humid hides to ensure the gecko always has access to adequate moisture.

Substrate choices for adults include paper towels, reptile carpet, slate or ceramic tile, and bioactive substrate mixes designed for arid species. If using a loose substrate, ensure the gecko is feeding properly and not ingesting significant amounts of substrate material. Regardless of substrate type, spot-clean waste daily, sanitize the water dish regularly, and perform thorough enclosure cleanings on a monthly basis to maintain a hygienic environment.

Preventive Health Care

Preventive care is the foundation of long-term health for an adult leopard gecko. Beyond the annual veterinary exam, daily observation of your gecko's behavior, appetite, and physical appearance allows you to catch potential problems before they become serious. A healthy adult leopard gecko is alert during evening hours, feeds eagerly, sheds cleanly, passes well-formed droppings, and maintains a stable weight.

Metabolic bone disease remains a threat even in adulthood if supplementation lapses or UVB exposure is insufficient. While leopard geckos are crepuscular and do not require intense UVB lighting, research increasingly supports the use of low-level UVB as beneficial for vitamin D3 synthesis and overall health. If you choose to provide UVB, use a low-output bulb appropriate for shade-dwelling species and ensure the gecko can retreat from the light to regulate its own exposure.

Parasite screening through fecal testing should be performed at least once per year, or more frequently if the gecko shows symptoms such as loose stools, weight loss, or decreased appetite. Cryptosporidium is a particularly concerning parasite in leopard geckos because it is difficult to treat and can be chronic. Quarantine any new geckos for at least 60 to 90 days before introducing them into the same room as established animals, and practice strict hygiene between enclosures.

Dental and oral health is sometimes overlooked in reptile care. Adult leopard geckos can develop mouth rot, also known as infectious stomatitis, which presents as redness, swelling, or cheesy discharge around the gum line and mouth. Causes include injuries from feeding, unsanitary conditions, and immune suppression from chronic stress or poor husbandry. Early detection and veterinary treatment are essential, as advanced cases can become systemic infections.

Behavioral Maturity

Adult leopard geckos are generally settled, predictable animals with well-established routines. Most adults display consistent patterns of activity, emerging from their hides at roughly the same time each evening, patrolling their enclosure, and showing reliable feeding responses. Getting to know your individual gecko's normal behavior patterns is one of the most valuable tools you have for detecting health changes, since behavioral shifts are often the first sign that something is off.

Personality varies considerably between individual leopard geckos. Some adults are enthusiastically interactive, approaching the front of the enclosure when they see their keeper and readily climbing onto offered hands. Others remain more reserved, preferring to observe from the safety of a hide and tolerating handling without actively seeking it. Both temperament types are normal, and neither indicates better or worse health. Respect your gecko's personality and work within its comfort zone.

Seasonal behavioral changes can occur in adult leopard geckos, particularly during the cooler months. Some geckos experience a natural decrease in appetite and activity during winter, sometimes referred to as brumation. This is a normal biological response triggered by changes in temperature and photoperiod. If your gecko reduces its food intake during winter but maintains its weight and shows no other signs of illness, there is generally no cause for concern. Ensure temperatures remain within acceptable ranges and continue offering food, even if the gecko eats less than usual.

Territorial behavior is most commonly observed in males but can occur in females as well. An adult gecko that suddenly becomes aggressive toward hands, cage furniture, or its own reflection may be experiencing hormonal fluctuations or responding to visual stimuli from nearby geckos. Rearranging the enclosure, providing visual barriers between adjacent tanks, and reducing unnecessary handling during these periods typically resolves the behavior.

Shedding & Skin Care

Adult leopard geckos shed their skin every four to eight weeks under normal conditions, with the frequency influenced by growth rate, nutritional status, and environmental factors. The shedding process typically takes 24 to 48 hours from the initial dulling and whitening of the skin to complete removal. Healthy adults shed their skin in large, intact pieces and consume the shed material, which recycles nutrients and eliminates scent traces that could attract predators in the wild.

The humid hide is the single most important tool for ensuring clean, complete sheds throughout the gecko's adult life. Maintain the humid hide substrate at a consistently damp level, checking and re-moistening daily. During active shedding, some keepers increase the humidity slightly or add a second humid area to the enclosure. If the gecko is approaching a shed, as indicated by the characteristic milky, opaque appearance of the skin, avoid handling to reduce stress during this vulnerable period.

Retained shed remains a concern in adulthood and most commonly affects the toes, tail tip, and eye caps. Toes are particularly vulnerable because constricted bands of retained shed can cut off circulation and lead to digit loss over time. After each shed, visually inspect all toes, the tail tip, and the area around the eyes. If retained shed is present, a brief soak in lukewarm shallow water followed by gentle removal with a damp cotton swab usually resolves the issue.

Chronic shedding problems in an adult gecko that previously shed without difficulty may indicate declining humidity in the enclosure, dehydration, nutritional deficiency, or an underlying health condition such as thyroid dysfunction. Evaluate the enclosure setup first, as this is the most common cause. If the environment checks out and shedding issues persist, consult your reptile veterinarian for a thorough health assessment.
