An adult common house gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus, reaches its full body size between ten and fourteen months of age, with most individuals measuring three and a half to five and a half inches in total length from snout to tail tip, though exceptional specimens can approach six inches. Males tend to be slightly larger and more robustly built than females and are readily distinguished by the pronounced hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail and the row of enlarged femoral pores along the inner thighs. Females have a more slender profile and lack these secondary sexual characteristics, though they are otherwise similar in appearance and behavior.
The adult phase represents the longest portion of the house gecko's captive lifespan, spanning from approximately one year of age through to the onset of geriatric decline, which typically begins around five to seven years in well-maintained animals. During these prime years, the gecko's care requirements stabilize significantly compared to the rapidly shifting demands of the hatchling and juvenile phases. Growth has effectively ceased, shedding frequency has settled into a predictable rhythm, and the animal has established behavioral patterns and enclosure preferences that make daily management straightforward for attentive keepers.
Adult house geckos are nocturnal, arboreal, and strongly territorial. A well-acclimated adult will emerge from its daytime hiding spot during the late evening hours, patrol the vertical surfaces of its enclosure, vocalize with the species' characteristic chirping calls, and actively hunt any live prey items present. This predictable behavioral routine is one of the most reliable indicators of a healthy adult. Deviations from the established pattern, such as failure to emerge during the active period, cessation of vocalizations, or loss of interest in prey, often signal developing health issues or environmental stressors that should be identified and addressed promptly.
The stability of the adult phase should not be mistaken for a period that requires minimal attention. Long-term captive care introduces its own set of challenges, including the gradual accumulation of husbandry errors that may not produce visible consequences for months or years, the risk of dietary monotony leading to subclinical nutritional deficiencies, and the complacency that can develop when an animal appears to be thriving without incident. The most successful long-term keepers of house geckos maintain consistent monitoring routines and treat the adult phase as an ongoing commitment rather than a problem that has been solved.
