While a healthy senior Glass Lizard may show individual signs of aging such as reduced activity or slower feeding response that stabilize at a new baseline, an animal entering terminal decline exhibits a pattern of continuous deterioration that does not plateau or respond to the supportive care measures that sustained it through the earlier geriatric period.
The most reliable early indicator of terminal decline is a sustained and progressive loss of appetite that cannot be attributed to seasonal cycling, shedding, or a discrete treatable illness. A Glass Lizard that has gradually reduced its feeding from two meals per week to one over the course of several months, and now refuses food entirely for periods exceeding three to four weeks despite presentation of its most preferred prey items at optimal temperatures, is exhibiting a feeding cessation pattern that frequently signals systemic organ failure or advanced neoplastic disease. Weight loss during this phase is progressive and visible, with the body contour becoming increasingly angular, the lateral grooves appearing disproportionately deep, and the head appearing oversized relative to the wasting trunk.
Mobility loss is another hallmark of terminal decline and manifests as a progressive inability to perform the lateral undulatory locomotion that is fundamental to the species' movement. The animal may move only when directly stimulated, and its movements may appear uncoordinated, asymmetrical, or punctuated by resting pauses that were not previously part of its locomotor pattern. In advanced cases, the animal may become effectively immobile, lying in a single position for extended periods and failing to reposition itself relative to the thermal gradient even when its body temperature drops below the preferred range. This thermoregulatory failure is one of the most concerning signs a keeper can observe, as it indicates that the animal has lost the behavioral drive or physical capacity to perform the most basic survival function.
Other signs that collectively support a terminal decline assessment include persistent shedding failure despite optimal humidity, progressive discoloration or opacity of the eyes, changes in respiratory pattern such as open-mouth breathing or visible effort during respiration, persistent abnormalities in fecal and urate output including cessation of elimination entirely, and a general loss of responsiveness to environmental stimuli that previously elicited clear behavioral reactions. No single sign in isolation confirms terminal decline, but the convergence of multiple indicators across different body systems, progressing over weeks despite appropriate veterinary care, builds a clinical picture that the animal's remaining time is limited and that the focus of care should shift from treatment to comfort.
