Males tend to mature slightly earlier than females. Before attempting to breed Gila Monsters, both animals should be in excellent health, at an appropriate weight, and free from parasites or other medical conditions. A pre-breeding veterinary examination for both the male and female is strongly recommended.

Sexing Gila Monsters can be challenging for inexperienced keepers. Males are generally slightly larger with broader heads and thicker tail bases, but these differences are subtle and unreliable on their own. Probing by an experienced reptile veterinarian or breeder is the most accurate method of sex determination. Attempting to probe without proper training can injure the animal and should not be attempted by novices.

Both animals should have undergone a proper brumation period prior to the breeding season. Brumation serves as a hormonal trigger for reproductive cycling in both sexes. Males that have not been brumated may show reduced interest in mating, and females that skip brumation may fail to develop follicles or produce infertile eggs. As egg-laying approaches, the female will begin searching for a suitable nesting site. Provide a large, deep container filled with moist substrate — a mixture of organic topsoil and sand or vermiculite works well — placed on the warm side of the enclosure. The container should be large enough for the female to enter completely and turn around, with substrate deep enough for her to excavate a burrow of six to eight inches.

Egg deposition typically occurs at night and may take several hours to complete. A typical Gila Monster clutch contains between two and twelve eggs, with five to seven being average for healthy adult females. The first sign of active hatching is a small slit in the egg surface created by the hatchling's egg tooth. This process, known as pipping, may begin 24 to 48 hours before the hatchling fully emerges, and patience during this period is critical.

Do not assist hatchlings unless there are clear signs of distress after 48 hours of pipping without progress.
