Frog-Eyed Geckos reach sexual maturity at approximately twelve to eighteen months of age, though the exact timing depends on growth rate, nutritional history, and overall health status. Males typically mature slightly earlier than females, sometimes showing reproductive behaviors as young as ten months, while females generally require fourteen to eighteen months before their bodies are physiologically prepared for the demands of egg production. Chronological age alone is an unreliable indicator of breeding readiness. The more important criteria are body weight, tail condition, and overall structural maturity, all of which should indicate that the animal has completed its growth phase and has sufficient reserves to support reproduction without compromising its own health.
Sexual dimorphism in Teratoscincus scincus is subtle compared to many gecko species but becomes more apparent as animals approach maturity. Males tend to develop a slightly broader head relative to body size and may display a marginally more robust build through the neck and shoulders. The most reliable method of sex determination in this species is examination of the precloacal region, where mature males exhibit a row of precloacal pores that appear as a series of small, waxy-looking dots arranged in a chevron pattern anterior to the vent. These pores are absent or vestigial in females. In subadult animals where the pores may not yet be fully developed, a combination of body proportions and behavioral observation during evening activity periods may provide provisional sex identification, but definitive determination should wait until the pores are clearly visible.
Before committing to a breeding project, the keeper should ensure that both prospective parents are in optimal health and body condition. Both animals should be at least eighteen months old, well-established in their enclosures, free of parasites as confirmed by fecal examination within the preceding three months, and displaying a body condition score that reflects neither obesity nor insufficiency. The female's tail should be plump and well-stocked with fat reserves, as she will draw heavily on these stores during follicle development and egg production. A female bred in suboptimal condition faces elevated risks of egg binding, nutritional depletion, and prolonged recovery that can shorten her reproductive career and her overall lifespan.
The keeper should also have a clear plan for the offspring before breeding begins. Frog-Eyed Geckos produce relatively small clutches, typically one to two eggs per clutch, but a productive female can lay multiple clutches per season. Even a single breeding pair can produce six to twelve hatchlings over the course of a season, and each of those hatchlings will require individual housing, feeding, and health monitoring for weeks or months until placement with qualified homes can be arranged. Breeding without a responsible plan for the resulting offspring contributes to the surplus of unwanted reptiles in the hobby and is an avoidable ethical failure.
