Frilled dragon hatchlings emerge from their eggs after an incubation period of roughly 70 to 90 days. When a hatchling pips through the eggshell, it is essential to resist the urge to assist. Early Socialization

Unlike mammals, reptiles do not form social bonds in the traditional sense, but they can become accustomed to human presence and handling through consistent, low-stress interactions. During the first week, limit contact to enclosure maintenance and feeding so the hatchling can settle into its new environment.

After the first week, you can begin brief handling sessions lasting no more than a few minutes. Support the hatchling's entire body and avoid gripping or restraining it. Allow the dragon to walk across your hands and arms at its own pace. If the hatchling displays its frill, gapes its mouth, or attempts to flee, calmly return it to the enclosure and try again the next day. Forcing interactions will only increase defensive behavior.

Consistency is more effective than duration when it comes to building tolerance. Short daily sessions are far better than infrequent lengthy ones. Over time, most frilled dragons will learn to associate handling with neutral or even positive experiences, particularly if handling is occasionally paired with feeding afterward.

It is generally best to house hatchlings individually or in very small groups of similar-sized animals. Frilled dragons can be territorial, and size differences among hatchlings can lead to competition for food, basking spots, and hiding places. Health Screening & Vet Visits

An initial veterinary examination within the first two weeks of life is strongly recommended for any newly hatched frilled dragon, particularly for first-time keepers. A reptile-experienced veterinarian can assess overall body condition, check for congenital abnormalities, evaluate hydration status, and provide guidance on husbandry tailored to your specific setup. Establishing a relationship with a qualified reptile vet early on is invaluable.

Fecal examinations are an important component of early health screening. Parasitic infections, including pinworms, coccidia, and flagellates, are common in reptiles and can be particularly debilitating in small hatchlings. A fresh fecal sample can be tested to identify any parasites, allowing treatment to begin before the animal's health is compromised.

Metabolic bone disease is one of the most significant health threats to young frilled dragons. It results from inadequate calcium intake, insufficient UVB exposure, or improper supplementation. Early signs include lethargy, tremors, a soft or rubbery jaw, and difficulty climbing. While a day of fasting is not unusual, prolonged appetite loss in a rapidly growing animal is a red flag.

Lethargy and prolonged time spent on the enclosure floor rather than elevated on branches are concerning behaviors in a species that is naturally active and arboreal. A hatchling that sits listlessly at the bottom of its enclosure, keeps its eyes closed during daylight hours, or fails to respond to stimuli may be seriously ill. Respiratory infections, which can result from improper temperatures or excessive humidity without adequate ventilation, may present as wheezing, mucus around the nostrils, or open-mouth breathing.

Retained shed is a common but potentially serious issue if it constricts blood flow to the toes, tail, or frill margins. Check the hatchling carefully after each shed cycle and gently assist with any retained pieces by increasing humidity or offering a brief lukewarm soak. Never pull retained shed forcefully, as this can damage the delicate new skin underneath.

Swelling of the limbs or jaw, difficulty walking, and tremors are signs of metabolic bone disease and should be treated as a veterinary emergency. Likewise, any prolapse of tissue from the vent, visible injuries, or sudden dramatic weight loss requires immediate professional evaluation.
