During this extended developmental window, the animal undergoes substantial physical transformation, growing from a two-to-three-inch hatchling into a sleek, muscular lizard that may reach five to six inches in total length before the growth rate begins to plateau. Males generally grow slightly larger than females and begin showing subtle sexually dimorphic features as they approach maturity, including a broader head and thicker jaw musculature, although these differences remain indistinct until late in the juvenile period.
The most dramatic visible change during the juvenile stage involves the gradual fading of the brilliant blue tail coloration that defines the hatchling's appearance. In females, this fading proceeds slowly, and some adult females retain a faint blue-gray wash on the tail throughout their lives. In males, the blue fades more completely and is eventually replaced by a brownish or grayish tone as the animal approaches sexual maturity. Simultaneously, the five bold dorsal stripes that give the species its common name may begin to lose definition in males, with the dark interspaces lightening and the stripe contrast diminishing as the overall body color shifts toward a more uniform olive-brown. These color changes are driven by hormonal shifts associated with sexual maturation and are a normal, healthy part of development that should not concern keepers.
Skeletal growth during the juvenile phase demands consistent nutritional support, particularly calcium and vitamin D3, because the long bones, vertebral column, and skull are all actively mineralizing and elongating. A juvenile that has been underfed or inadequately supplemented during this period may develop permanent skeletal abnormalities that cannot be corrected once the growth plates close. Weight gain should be steady and proportional to length gain, producing a lizard that appears filled out but not obese. An overfed juvenile that puts on excessive fat stores relative to its frame size is at risk for hepatic lipidosis and reduced reproductive fitness later in life, so keepers should aim for a lean, athletic body condition rather than maximum mass.
Regular shedding continues throughout the juvenile period at intervals of approximately every three to four weeks, gradually lengthening as the growth rate slows toward the end of this stage. Each shed should come off cleanly in large sections. Persistent difficulty with shedding, particularly retained skin on the toes, tail, or around the eyes, typically points to inadequate humidity within the enclosure or insufficient access to rough surfaces that assist the mechanical process of peeling away old skin. A rough-textured rock or piece of bark positioned near the basking spot gives the juvenile a surface to rub against when initiating a shed, and a humid hide should remain available at all times.
