An animal in terminal decline may lose twenty to thirty percent of its remaining body mass within two to three weeks as muscle tissue is catabolized for energy in the absence of nutritional intake. The limbs appear thin with visible bone outlines, and the ribcage and pelvic structure become prominently visible through the skin.
