An adult fire-bellied newt requires a well-designed semi-aquatic enclosure that reflects its natural habitat of shallow ponds, rice paddies, ditches, and slow-moving stream margins throughout temperate East Asia. The minimum enclosure size for a pair of adult Cynops is a standard twenty-gallon long aquarium, with an additional five gallons of effective space recommended for each additional newt in the colony. These newts are social animals that thrive in small groups, and a well-proportioned colony of four to six individuals in a forty-gallon breeder tank creates an engaging, naturalistic display while providing adequate space for individual movement and feeding without territorial conflict.
The water section of the adult enclosure should comprise approximately sixty to seventy percent of the total floor area, with a depth ranging from four to six inches. This depth allows comfortable swimming, natural foraging behavior along the substrate, and sufficient water volume to buffer against temperature fluctuations and waste accumulation between water changes. The remaining thirty to forty percent of the enclosure should consist of a land area elevated above the waterline, constructed from stacked slate, textured stone, cork bark platforms, or a purpose-built shelf of aquarium-safe materials. The land-to-water transition must include a gradual ramp or series of stepped surfaces that allow the newts to move freely between zones without having to scale vertical barriers. Abrupt drops from a high land shelf into deep water can startle a newt into injuring itself against submerged hardscape during an uncontrolled descent.
Substrate selection for the aquatic section should prioritize safety and ease of maintenance. Smooth, rounded river pebbles large enough that the newts cannot accidentally ingest them during feeding strikes are a popular and effective choice. Fine gravel and sand substrates pose a genuine impaction risk for fire-bellied newts, which are somewhat indiscriminate strikers that may accidentally swallow substrate particles along with a food item. A bare-bottom aquatic section is the easiest to keep clean but lacks aesthetic appeal and does not support rooted live plants. Large river stones over ten millimeters in diameter strike a practical balance between visual appeal, biological filtration support, and safety. The land section benefits from a moisture-retaining substrate of sphagnum moss, coconut fiber, or natural leaf litter that stays damp without pooling water.
Live aquatic plants are highly recommended for the adult enclosure because they contribute to water quality through nitrogen uptake, provide visual barriers that reduce stress in group-housed animals, and create surfaces for algae growth and microorganism colonization that supplement the newts' diet. Hardy species such as Java fern, Anubias varieties, Java moss, and Marimo moss balls tolerate the cool water temperatures and low light conditions preferred by fire-bellied newts and require minimal maintenance. Delicate plant species that demand high-intensity lighting, CO2 injection, or warm water temperatures above 76 degrees Fahrenheit are incompatible with Cynops husbandry and should be avoided. Floating plants like duckweed or water lettuce can be used sparingly to diffuse light and provide surface cover, but they should not be allowed to form a dense mat that impedes the newts' access to the air-water interface for breathing.
