Fence Lizard hatchlings, Sceloporus undulatus, emerge from their eggs as remarkably tiny but fully formed reptiles measuring approximately one and a half to two inches in total length. Unlike many captive-bred reptile species where the keeper controls incubation parameters precisely, Fence Lizard eggs are frequently incubated in naturalistic substrate setups or field-collected clutches, meaning the exact moment of hatching can be unpredictable. The neonate uses a small, temporary egg tooth on the tip of its snout to slit through the leathery shell, and this process can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day. Keepers must not attempt to assist the hatching process, as the hatchling's timing is governed by its readiness to breathe independently and by the completion of yolk internalization, both of which proceed on biological schedules that human intervention disrupts rather than helps.
Immediately after emerging, the hatchling may remain partially inside the egg or sit motionless beside the shell for several hours. This resting phase is entirely normal and serves an important physiological purpose. The neonate is completing the absorption of its residual yolk sac, which provides the initial energy reserves, hydration, and maternal antibodies that sustain the animal until it begins hunting on its own. The umbilical site where the yolk sac was attached should close cleanly within the first twelve to twenty-four hours. Any visible yolk material trailing from the abdomen, persistent wetness or redness at the umbilical site, or a distended ventral area warrants immediate attention and potentially veterinary consultation with a reptile-experienced practitioner.
The receiving enclosure for hatchlings should be prepared well in advance of the expected hatch date. Fence Lizard neonates are extraordinarily small and can escape through gaps that would contain most other commonly kept reptile hatchlings, so the enclosure must be thoroughly inspected for any openings larger than an eighth of an inch. A five to ten gallon terrarium with fine mesh screening works well as a starter enclosure. Substrate at this stage should be simple and non-particulate, such as unbleached paper towels, to allow the keeper to monitor feeding, defecation, and umbilical healing without obstruction. Naturalistic substrates can be introduced once the hatchling is feeding reliably and the umbilical site has fully healed.
A healthy Fence Lizard hatchling displays several clear indicators within the first day. The animal should right itself easily if gently turned, its eyes should be fully open and responsive to movement, and it will begin tongue-flicking and visually scanning its environment within hours of emergence. The dorsal scales should lie flat and show the characteristic gray-brown coloration with darker wavy crossbands that are present from birth. Hatchlings that remain lethargic, fail to right themselves, exhibit labored breathing visible as exaggerated throat movement, or show any discharge from the eyes, nostrils, or cloaca require immediate veterinary evaluation, as neonatal mortality in this species often results from problems that are treatable if caught within the first day but fatal if overlooked.
