By this point, the tortoise has achieved most of its skeletal growth, the carapace has reached full or near-full mineralization, and the animal has established the behavioral patterns and temperament that will characterize it for the remainder of its life. An adult male generally measures eleven to fourteen inches in carapace length and weighs between three and six pounds, while females tend to be slightly smaller, reaching ten to twelve inches and weighing two and a half to five pounds, though considerable individual variation exists.
The prime adult years represent the longest and most stable phase in this species' life cycle, spanning potentially three decades or more under proper care. During this period, the tortoise's caloric requirements stabilize, growth slows to a nearly imperceptible pace, and the animal's personality becomes fully established. The keeper's focus during the adult years should center on maintaining appropriate body condition without obesity, providing varied environmental stimulation to prevent behavioral stagnation, conducting regular health assessments to catch problems early, and ensuring that the fundamental environmental parameters of temperature, humidity, and UVB exposure remain within the species' optimal range day after day and year after year. The consistency challenge is the defining feature of adult tortoise care, as the dramatic, visible changes of the growth years give way to a maintenance rhythm that can lead to complacency if the keeper is not deliberate about sustained attention.
Sexual dimorphism becomes fully apparent during the adult years and is important for keepers to recognize both for identification purposes and for anticipating sex-specific health concerns and behaviors. Females retain a flat plastron, a shorter tail, and a broader posterior body shape that accommodates egg development.
