This large plastron combined with the functional hinges provides the turtle with effective protection against small predators and contributes to its ability to tolerate brief periods of terrestrial activity during overland movements between water bodies, a behavior that is well documented in wild populations.
Sexual dimorphism becomes reliably identifiable in adult Eastern Mud Turtles and is important for keepers to understand, particularly if breeding is contemplated or if multiple animals are housed in proximity. Males are typically recognizable by their longer, thicker tails with the cloacal opening positioned distal to the carapace margin, a concave plastron that facilitates mounting during copulation, and roughened, patch-like scales on the inner surfaces of the hind limbs that provide grip during mating. Females have shorter, thinner tails with the cloacal opening closer to the shell margin, a flat or slightly convex plastron that maximizes internal space for egg development, and lack the specialized hind limb scaling. Males also tend to have proportionally larger heads with more powerful jaw musculature than females of equivalent body size.
Body condition assessment in the adult mud turtle focuses on several visual and tactile indicators that the experienced keeper learns to evaluate during routine handling. The limbs should be well-muscled and rounded, not bony or emaciated. The neck should fill the anterior plastral opening without excessive fatty folds that indicate obesity. The eyes should be clear, bright, and fully open, with no swelling or discharge. The shell should be uniformly hard with no soft areas, pitting, or discoloration, and the scutes should lie flat against the underlying bone without lifting or peeling at the edges. A healthy adult mud turtle at optimal body condition has a carapace that appears full and slightly convex in cross-section, not concave or pinched. Regular weight monitoring, while less critical than during the juvenile growth phase, remains a useful tool for detecting gradual changes in condition that might not be visible to the unaided eye.
